ABA Midyear Meeting

Our podcast partners at Legal Talk Network have been on the scene of the 2017 ABA Midyear Meeting in Miami, recording interviews with attendees about some of the most urgent legal issues facing the profession. To get the scoop on what some of our country’s top legal minds are thinking about, check out episodes of Legal Talk Network’s On the Road podcast below:

The Decline of American Jury Trials

Alan Dimond, chair of the American Bar Association’s Commission on the American Jury, joins Laurence Colletti in this report from On The Road to discuss the commission and why the number of trials in the U.S. seems to have fallen so dramatically. According to their preliminary report, there are financial, sentencing and other contributing reasons for fewer trials in the states, and the commission is investigating whether this is something that the ABA can and/or should try to change.

Lawyers: The Next Generation

So you’ve gone to law school and you know how to take tests really, really well. But did you know that being a real lawyer can involve business and tech knowledge beyond what you were tested on? In this episode of On the Road, host Laurence Colletti talks to Anna Romanskaya, chair of the ABA’s Young Lawyers Division. Together, they discuss the initiatives the YLD is taking to give young lawyers the business experience they didn’t receive in school. They also talk about what the YLD is doing to improve access to education for the generation that hasn’t yet reached law school.

Civil Justice for All

A committee was established by the Conference of Chief Justices with the goal of finding ways to improve the cost and efficiency of the civil justice system. In this report from On the Road, host Laurence Colletti interviews members of that committee including Judge Jennifer D. Bailey, Dean Hannah Lieberman, Chief Justice Thomas A. Balmer and Chief Justice Wallace Bernard Jefferson. Together, they discuss their report, which details 13 ways state court systems can improve civil cases. These recommendations range from curbing excessive discovery to simply using time effectively.

Fighting the Tide of Student Debt

If you want to be a successful lawyer, law school is a given. With the hike in student loans, however, it may be a while before you actually make any money. In this On the Road episode, Sharon Nelson and Sandy Gallant-Jones interview Crystal Araujo, Jennifer Nicholls, Michael Dumas and Whitney Barkley about rising student loans and what this means for new lawyers. A couple programs are in place to help students with their debt, like income-driven payment plans and loan-repayment assistance programs, but different borrowers need different solutions. For example, recent graduates aren’t the only ones concerned about their debt. Older graduates and those who paid for their children to attend college are also experiencing this burden, and potential solutions may look different for them. The group discusses this as well as the way law schools are reacting to the concerns of their students. Some schools are marketing affordability, but is this enough to encourage the attendance of potential students wary of the expense?

Updates from ABA President Linda Klein

There are often many things going on with the American Bar Association, but few know more about them than ABA President Linda Klein. In this On The Road report, Digital Detectives hosts Sharon Nelson and Jim Calloway interview Linda Klein about current hot-button issues for the association. Together, they discuss Linda’s statement regarding the recent presidential executive orders on immigration, the veterans initiative, the ABA Blueprint web tool, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee and Law Day 2017. Tune in for an inside look at what the American Bar Association has going on.
