President Donald Trump on Wednesday said a federal appeals court hearing on his immigration order was “sad” and “disgraceful.
“I don’t ever want to call a court biased, so I won’t call it biased,” Trump said of the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. “But courts seem to be so political, and it would be so great for our justice system if they would be able to read a statement and do what’s right.” The New York Times, the Washington Post and CNN covered Trump’s comments.
The 9th Circuit hearing on Tuesday considered whether to keep in place a nationwide temporary restraining order that blocks Trump’s temporary ban on refugees and immigrants from seven majority-Muslim nations from entering the country.
Trump criticized the hearing during a meeting of sheriffs and police chiefs. “I listened to a bunch of stuff last night on television that was disgraceful,” Trump said. “I think it’s sad. I think it’s a sad day. I think our security is at risk today.”
Trump began his remarks by reading a federal law that gives the president power to restrict immigration that is detrimental to the country. Trump said he had the authority to issue the temporary ban and “a bad high school student would understand this.”
