Chadbourne & Parke has lost another partner in London as its merger with Norton Rose Fulbright nears completion.
City partner Andrei Baev is joining Reed Smith’s energy and natural resources practice, two years after becoming Chadbourne’s Moscow managing partner.
Baev had split his time between Moscow and London, taking on much the same role as he had done at BLP.
He was a partner at BLP between 2011 and 2015, after starting off his career at Allen & Overy. He became a partner at the magic circle firm in 2004.
Reed Smith’s energy and natural resources chair Prajakt Samant said: “Baev will especially help connect our practice with our financial industry group, our trade finance teams, our Kazakhstan office, and our rapidly expanding international arbitration practice.”
Specialising in representing major Russian corporates, Baev has advised on projects in the oil and gas sector, including the financing of cross-border pipeline projects, and upstream, midstream and downstream developments.
Baev’s exit comes just weeks before Chadbourne’s merger with Norton Rose Fulbright is expected to go live.
A number of Chadbourne City partners have already opted against the tie-up, leaving for Covington & Burling in London, Dubai and Johannesburg. Covington hired London project finance duo Ben Donovan and Agnieszka Klich, as well as Chadbourne’s Dubai head Jack Greenwald and partner Richard Keenan.
Earlier this month, The Lawyer revealed there was a bone of contention in the firm’s project finance groups, with sources in the market claiming there would be too much overlap with Norton Rose Fulbright’s current City partnership.
The departures are not isolated to London and the Middle East, with Chadbourne’s chair of IP in New York also headed to Alston & Bird.
Norton Rose Fulbright also lost nine energy partners to Baker Botts’ Houston office in February.
Reed Smith meanwhile has been rapidly expanding in London after taking on a 50-lawyer team from King & Wood Mallesons. The group is based across London, Frankfurt, Munich and Paris, and consists of 17 partners.
